Idaho Falls, Idaho

Idaho Falls homes and what their floors are hiding

Idaho Falls is East Idaho's largest city, and its housing tells the story of the atomic boom. Thousands of ranch and split-level homes went up in the 1950s and 1960s as the National Reactor Testing Station — now Idaho National Laboratory — pulled workers to the Snake River Plain. Many of those homes were built with oak strip floors that later disappeared under wall-to-wall carpet, which means a surprising number of Idaho Falls living rooms have refinishable hardwood waiting a quarter-inch below the shag. At the same time, the city keeps spreading east onto the bench with new construction that needs flooring timed to a build schedule. Across all of it, the climate is the common thread: Idaho Falls sits near 4,700 feet on a semi-arid plain, and long winters of forced-air heat drop indoor humidity hard. Solid wood shrinks and thin seasonal gaps open up, then close again when summer and the irrigation season raise humidity. That cycle is why we read moisture before every install, acclimate material in the home, and leave proper expansion room — and why so many local repair calls are winter gaps, squeaks and the occasional cupped board near a kitchen or bath.

Working across Idaho Falls

We cover the whole city — the older grid around the Idaho Falls Temple and the greenbelt, the Ammon-side and Hitt Road corridors, the numbered avenues, and the newer subdivisions out past Hitt and up the bench toward Iona. Older homes near downtown and along Lincoln Road are our classic sand-and-refinish and board-repair work, often uncovering that 1950s oak. Newer homes near Sunnyside and the bench are installs — real hardwood over a wood subfloor, or engineered plank and LVP over basement slabs. Kitchens and mudrooms off the garage are where we see the most water and wear. Because we're in town, we can usually get out for an estimate within a couple of business days, and we schedule around the school year and the ranch-country calendar the same as our neighbors do.

“We had carpet removed and new red oak flooring installed to match our existing floor. With Tyler's expert guidance we found the perfect stain color. The matching of old and new flooring is flawless and the result is stunning. Both Tyler and Danny do exceptional work and were always friendly and professional. Highly recommend!”

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ

Idaho Falls flooring questions

Can the oak under my carpet be refinished?

Often, yes. Many Idaho Falls homes from the 1950s–60s have oak strip floors under the carpet. We lift a corner in a closet to check species, condition and how much wood is left above the tongue. If there's enough, sanding and refinishing usually costs less than new flooring and brings the original floor back — call (844) 954-6342 and we'll take a look.

How much does hardwood refinishing cost in Idaho Falls?

It depends on square footage, how many coats and whether you're changing color, but refinishing is almost always cheaper than replacing. We measure the rooms, check the floor's thickness and give you a written, itemized price rather than a guess over the phone.

How soon can you start a job in Idaho Falls?

Because Idaho Falls is our base, we can usually get out for an estimate within a couple of business days, and schedule the work from there. Urgent water or deadline jobs move to the front. Larger installs depend on material lead time and acclimation, which we'll map out when we quote.

Can you install wood floors over a basement slab?

Not solid hardwood directly — a concrete slab holds and passes moisture that will cup and gap solid wood. For Idaho Falls basements we moisture-test the slab, then install engineered hardwood or waterproof LVP, floating or glued down, which are built to handle below-grade conditions.

Can we stay in the house while floors are refinished?

Usually, with some planning. Dust-contained sanding keeps most grit out of the rest of the home, but freshly finished floors need time to cure and can't take foot traffic, furniture or rugs right away. We'll give you a room-by-room schedule so you know which areas are off-limits and for how long.
