Wood Flooring in Shelley, Idaho
Shelley is about twenty minutes south of our Idaho Falls base, down US-91 in Bingham County. The common job here starts in the kitchen: owners pull out dated tile and want their hardwood to run on through, matched board for board to the floor already in the house. We remove tile, extend and blend hardwood, and refinish original oak and fir. We respond to calls within one business hour and provide written estimates within two business days. Shelley's brick homes and tile-to-hardwood kitchens
Shelley sits on the Snake River south of Idaho Falls, a Bingham County town founded in the early 1900s and named for storekeeper John F. Shelley. Its older neighborhoods near downtown hold solid brick homes from the first half of the twentieth century, and many still have their original oak and fir floors under the main rooms. Those floors are usually worth saving — early-century lumber is dense and refinishes beautifully — which makes Shelley strong refinishing territory. The signature remodel here involves the kitchen. For decades, kitchens in these homes were set off in tile or sheet vinyl while the hardwood stopped at the doorway. Owners updating a Shelley kitchen now want that break gone: tile out, and the existing hardwood extended across the kitchen so the main floor reads as one continuous surface. That's a matching job as much as an install. We source boards of the same species and width, weave them into the existing field with a proper lace-in rather than a seam, then sand and finish the whole floor together so old and new disappear into each other. Shelley shares the valley's dry winters, so even in these older homes we watch humidity, and we check the thickness of previously sanded floors before refinishing again. Between the brick-home refinishes and the tile-to-hardwood kitchen extensions, most of what we do in Shelley is about honoring a floor that's already there.
On the ground
Spud Day town: landmarks around Shelley
Shelley is best known for Idaho Spud Day, held every September since 1927, when the town serves free baked potatoes and the parade runs down State Street. Downtown clusters along State Street and the old US-91 corridor, lined with the brick storefronts and early homes that make up much of our refinishing work. The Snake River runs along the town's west side, and Shelley High School — home of the Russets — anchors the community. Most of our Shelley jobs are in those older near-downtown homes: refinishing original oak and fir, extending hardwood where kitchen tile comes out, and board-matching repairs. Newer subdivisions on the edges of town bring the occasional install and LVP job. Twenty minutes down US-91 puts Shelley within easy reach, and we book estimates there within a couple of business days, scheduling larger refinishing jobs around each home's routine.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ
Shelley flooring questions
Can you remove kitchen tile and extend my hardwood?
Yes — it's one of our most-requested Shelley jobs. We demolish and haul out the old tile and thinset, level the subfloor to the height of your existing hardwood, then lace new boards into the kitchen so the floor runs continuously. Matching the species and width of your original floor is the key. We then sand and finish the whole main level together so the old tile line vanishes.
Will new boards match my existing oak?
In almost every case, yes. We identify your floor's species, width and cut, source matching boards, and lace them into the existing field rather than butting a seam. The real blending happens in the finish: sanding old and new together and applying stain and topcoat as one floor erases the line. Shelley's early-century oak and fir are species we match regularly.
How long will my kitchen be out of use?
For a typical Shelley tile-to-hardwood kitchen, expect the room to be out of use for about one to two weeks. Tile demolition and subfloor prep take a couple of days, new boards need acclimation time, and sanding plus finish coats need cure time before furniture and appliances return. We give you a day-by-day schedule so you can plan meals around the off-limits days.
Can older Shelley floors be refinished again?
Usually, but not infinitely. Each sanding removes a little wood, so a floor already refinished several times may be too thin to take another full sand safely. In Shelley's older brick homes we lift a vent or threshold board to measure the wood left above the tongue. If it's thin, a screen-and-recoat or buff-and-coat can renew the finish without removing wood.
