Wood Flooring in Iona, Idaho
Iona sits about fifteen minutes northeast of our Idaho Falls base, up on the bench. Many of the newer homes here were built with finished basements on concrete slabs, and that's exactly where the wrong floor goes wrong. We moisture-test the slab, then install engineered or floating floors that belong below grade — plus hardwood on the main level. We answer or return your call within one business hour and get out to quote within two business days. Call (844) 954-6342 to set it up.

Iona, Idaho
Iona's bench homes and their basement slabs
Iona grew about fifty percent in the 2010s, from 1,803 residents to 2,717, as families built new on the bench northeast of Idaho Falls. That boom gives the town a distinctive floor problem: a large share of its homes are newer two-stories and ramblers with fully finished basements poured on concrete slabs. Owners want wood downstairs, and the wrong choice there causes trouble. A concrete slab is never truly dry. It wicks ground moisture and releases vapor for years, and nail-down solid hardwood laid over it will cup, crown and gap as it absorbs that moisture from below. The fix isn't to avoid wood — it's to use the right wood. We moisture-test the slab with a calcium-chloride or in-situ probe, then install engineered hardwood or a floating floor over the correct underlayment and vapor barrier. These assemblies are built to ride out a slab's moisture where solid strips cannot. Up on the main level, where homes sit over a crawlspace or wood subfloor, solid hardwood is perfectly at home, and we often match its color to the engineered plank below so the house reads as one floor. Iona shares the Snake River Plain's dry winters, so even upstairs we acclimate material and leave expansion room. The older core near Iona Square adds the occasional refinishing job, but new-home slab-and-bench work is the signature of flooring in Iona.
On the ground
Iona Square and the bench above the valley
Iona climbs the bench northeast of Idaho Falls, reached by Iona Road and the county grid off US-20. The town began in 1883 as Sand Creek and was renamed Iona in the 1880s; its historic core still centers on Iona Square and the old main street, where a Daughters of Utah Pioneers marker records the first settlers. Above the original grid, newer subdivisions spread across the bench with the finished-basement homes that make up most of our work here. Typical Iona jobs are new installs: engineered or floating floors over basement slabs, solid hardwood on the main level, and stairs tying the two together. Older homes near the square bring the occasional sand-and-refinish. At about fifteen minutes from the shop and on our route to Ucon and Rigby, an Iona measure visit usually fits into our north-valley runs within two business days.

“Wood Flooring Idaho just finished our floors and they are beautiful! We had oak in the kitchen and wanted it extended into the dining room — their answer was “No Problem.” You absolutely cannot tell where they joined the new flooring with the old. They removed our tile entryway and replaced it with oak. Tyler is professional, particular and hardworking.”

FAQ
Iona flooring questions
Can hardwood go in an Iona basement?
Yes, but not solid nail-down hardwood directly on the slab. An Iona basement floor is concrete, and it passes moisture that cups and gaps solid strips. The right choice is engineered hardwood or a floating wood floor over a vapor barrier and underlayment — real wood on top, built to handle below-grade conditions. We moisture-test the slab first to confirm which assembly will hold up.
How do you test a concrete slab for moisture?
We use quantitative tests, not guesswork. Common methods are a calcium-chloride test that measures vapor coming off the slab over several days, and an in-situ relative-humidity probe set into the concrete. Both tell us whether an Iona slab is dry enough and which underlayment or vapor barrier the floor needs. We test before ordering material so the assembly matches your actual basement conditions.
Floating or glue-down: which is better on concrete?
Both work on an Iona slab; the slab's moisture reading decides. A floating engineered floor over a vapor barrier is forgiving, quick to install and handles minor slab movement well. Glue-down with the right moisture-control adhesive feels more solid underfoot and suits wider planks. Where readings run high, we lean floating with a robust barrier. We recommend the method after we test, not before.
Do you also do the basement stairs?
Yes. Finishing the staircase is a natural part of an Iona basement project. We can cap the existing stairs with hardwood treads and risers or rebuild them, matching the engineered floor at the bottom and the main-level wood at the top so the whole run looks intentional. Stairs take extra fitting time, which we build into the schedule and the written quote.
